Why is my website not showing in Google search?

Is your website not currently showing on Google search listings? Well, here I will show you how to see if your website is listed in Google. In many cases, Google will find your website within a week or two and add your site to the Google index. If your websiteisn’t showing in Google, there are some basic steps you can follow to get Google to index your website.

Is my website in Google search?

The first thing we really need to clarify is it that your website isn’t in Google search at all. Or just that your website isn’t showing for the searches you are hoping? These are two completely different problems and we need to be sure which it is.

The easiest way to determine if your website has any pages listed in Google is to simply type “site:www.yourdomain.com” into Google’s search. So if you website was Amazon.com, then you would type site:www.amazon.com into Google and it will show you all the pages listed for your site.  If pages can be seen then these pages are indexed in Google.

If your site is listed in Google, but not showing for the search your are targeting then you will need to follow some of the General SEO tips here.

Why is my website not in Google search?

There are a number of reason why your website isn’t showing in Googles listing, but usually it is pretty easy to add your website to Google. Most likely, if your website is not in Google, it will be for one of the below reasons.

Your website is too new for Google.

Google will often find your website on its own, within a week or two. But if Google doesn’t start listing your website within a couple of weeks, don’t worry. It is new and possibly doesn’t have any links to it yet, so Google simply doesn’t know it is there to be indexed.

What do you need to do to manually add your website to Google? Here is how to manually submit your website to Google.

Go to https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url you will then need to either sign in with a Google account if you have one or sign up for a google account if you don’t. Then you will simply be asked for your website URL (website address) and to submit. This will tell Google to check your website, this doesn’t happen immediately and doesn’t guarantee you a listing in Google, but in most cases within 48 hours your website will be on Google.

At this point it is a good idea to add your sitemap to Google, If you go to Google Webmaster tools and login. Then you can add you sitemap.xml file. This will tell Google about your websites page structure  and which pages you would like Google to list.

Your website has “no index” tags

“no index” tags are code used to tell search engines not to index your website/ pages within your website. You or whoever built your website may have added “no index” tags in error. This could explain why your website is not showing in Google rankings.

Your website isn’t optimised correctly for search engines

when you create a webpage, you need to at least add some basic optimisation for Google to understand what your website is about. If you are using a CMS like WordPress etc, then you will find that this is made a lot easier. If you are using WordPress or a similar CMS, then you find as long as the content is half decent and relevant then it will probably be listed in Google. This is not to say it will rank anywhere near page one on Google, but it probably will be listed. If you are using WordPress then I highly recommend that you use the Yoast SEO plugin, it makes your life a lot easier when it comes to onsite SEO. Avoid using any “grey” or “black-hat” SEO tricks, these are a sure way to get de-listed.

Your website has been removed from Google listing

Google may either temporarily or permanently delete your website for the Google listing if it believes it is obligated to do so by law, if the sites do not meet Google’s quality guidelines, or for other reasons, such as if the sites detract from users’ ability to locate relevant information.
